A few years ago I saw an interview with jazz musician John Scofield in which he described a moment with Miles Davis. I can’t find the interview, so this may be apocryphal, but here’s how I remember it:
Scofield: “Miles, I can't start my solo there. If I come in on that beat, it doesn't make any sense musically.”
Davis: “Who's gonna know?”
I have postponed writing here for a long time, mostly because I had it in my head that I would embarrass myself unless I wrote New Yorker quality articles here, as if I even could. Turns out I can post anything at all. Who’s gonna know?
